Here’s our first guest for NCC 2017. We’re very excited with this year’s lineup so far, and we’re still adding to it, but without further ado here is the first: The very awesome David Leach. Comic auteur and editor at Titan Comics:
How did you get into comics?
It’s the only thing I ever wanted to do. I’ve spent the last 31 years working in the comics industry as a writer, artist, cartoonist, colourist, letterer and editor. I got in by simply drawing and sending my work everywhere. My first comic strips were published in my local newspaper. My first job was working as Bob Godfrey’s ghost artist drawing Henry’s Cat for Buttons, The News of the World and the Halifax Young Savers Magazine. My first freelance comic strip was drawing Brad Habit and Phil Fitt for Whizzer N Chips and that led to me getting Pscyho Gran into Oink. After that it was all down hill.
How did Psycho Gran come about?
When I saw the preview issue of Oink! I knew i had to be in it. I’d been toying with the idea of a little old lady character for a while, I can’t remember exactly why, but I think it’s because I wanted a character who looked innocent and sweet but was utterly lethal, and no one ever thinks little old ladies can be dangerous, I aim to change that opinion. Plus I’ve always been interested in little old ladies, as characters. Her first strip arrived instantly into my mind and away I went. She was inspired, in no small part by the Giles granny and Margaret Rutherford.
What are you currently working on?
In my own time, I’m drawing new Psycho Gran strips for her third issue, as well as drawing the second issue of Psycho Gran Vs… (that’s her art comic book, where she beats up various comic book and movie heroes). I’m also about to start work on issue #3 of David Leach Conquers the Universe, my four-part comic-book autobiography. Work wise, i’m currently editing the following for Titan Comics: Hammer Mummy, Anno Dracula, The Prisoner, Dan Dare, Fighting American, SuperMansion and Captain Kronos. I’m also working on Volume 7 of the Flash Gordon reprints, volume 3 of Mandrake the Magician and I’m about to start work on a collection of vintage The Prisoner drawn by Gil Kane and Jack Kirby.
For the con, I’m hoping to bring along issue #2 of Psycho Gran Vs… finished as well as copies of DLCTU #1 & #2, plus lots of lovely art prints of dear old Psycho beating the living s**t out of people including, Judge Dredd, The Alien, Superman and a Dalek. Oh and a pillow so I can catch up on my sleep.
Lard and Peas people, lard and peas.
Be sure to stop by David’s table 14th October!!!
